Assignment 4- Katelyn Rowell- Some Red in the Family

When my mom was eight years old her parents separated. At the time, her father was in the air-force and wasn’t home often. Following the divorce, my mom moved to Ohio with my grandmother and saw her father even less. Today, my grandfather lives by himself in Arkansas. I see my other grandparents pretty regularly, however, we don’t see my mom’s father much as he lives in his own bubble and doesn’t make the effort to get out and see his family. Whenever we travel to Arkansas to see him, I try to make the most of the situation and get to know him better. In the past few years, I’ve come to realize that his political views are very different than mine. During the 2016 election, he would preach that Trump would “save” our country. Still today, he praises everything Trump does. Whenever I talk to him about politics, I find myself becoming very angry. I try to explain the other side to him, but he refuses to budge on his political beliefs. It’s of no use. Although I try to spend as much time with him as I can when we visit, I often have to leave the room when the subject of politics arises.
