Assignment 3 - Jordan Grady - My Old Kentucky Home

In the middle of fourth grade, moving from Maryland to Kentucky seemed world shattering. I was crushed to have to leave my friends, my home, and my state behind. The idea of being surrounded by strangers, starting anew was extremely daunting, especially as a shy kid. Once we moved, it became apparent that most things would remain the same, and that the change in setting wasn’t as bad as it once appeared. Until the first day of school. Upon entering the elementary school doors, jitters overtook me. The hard part would not be the new environment, teachers, or classes. Rather, it would be navigating my way through recess and being outgoing enough to make new friends. I put myself out there, introducing myself from the swings to the slides, conversing with my new classmates. This was a big leap, one that is still challenging to this day, but being placed in an entirely new atmosphere allowed me to become a more social person, learning to befriend others and make conversation better than before. These social skills are all because of my Old Kentucky Home, and if I could go back, I wouldn’t change a thing.
