When I think about the number of books I've read in the past 12 months it kind of makes me sad. When I was little I used to read ALL the time, and my dad would read to me every night well into middle school. Together we read the Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, the Redwall series, and Lord of the Rings. Some of my best memories come from reading. I have read 5 books this past year:
The Losers Club
The Great Gatsby
The Teenage Brain
Smart Money, Smart Kids
All Fishermen are Liars
The Great Gatsby and The Teenage Brain were both book I was required to read for school but I ended up liking. The Great Gatsby showed me that old books could, in fact, be fun to read, and I found the Teenage Brain enjoyable because it was fairly easy to understand and reading it gave me an excuse to ignore my family for a few hours over the summer. I was also very surprised that I liked these books because in the past I really only enjoyed fantasy novels but both of these books expanded my reading horizons to books outside that genre. Over winter break last year I read The Losers Club, my ten year old sister was reading it and one day I picked it up out of boredom and read it all in an afternoon. Even though it was an easy read, it brought me back to elementary school and I could weirdly relate to the characters, so I would like to congratulate the Author for being able to transcend age groups and write a book that my little sister and I both enjoyed. The last two books on my list were suggestions from my grandparents. Smart Money, Smart Kids is written by Dave Ramsey, one of my grandmothers idols. She said she would pay me $50 if I read it and could explain to her how to properly manage my money. Sadly I have yet to finish the book because school started and I kind of forgot about it until making this list. It is not a book that I would pick for myself, but money is convincing enough to make me read it. The final book All Fishermen are Liars was recommended to me by my grandfather. I was at their house right before school started and had just finished the Teenage Brain, so I was on a bit of a reading kick. My grandfather had just finished this book and was telling me how it made him laugh out loud at parts, I was intrigued, and decided to read it for myself. To me, it was not that funny. It was full of sarcasm and old man humor about fly fishing, but I can understand why my grandfather liked it.
