Assignment 4 - Rob Gilligan - Going against the grain
While I was growing up, it seemed every other kid around me had a phone, yet I still did not. My parents said there was no reason for me to have one, and unless they saw things differently, they would not get me one. Although I had an ipod, if I was not within wifi range there was no way for me to text anyone, or ever call anyone. If I ever needed a quick response from my parents I would need to ask to borrow someone's phone so I could give them a call. For a long while, this did not bother me, as I had my ipod, and just assumed the dangers of having a cell phone were all too real. However, as I went into middle school it became increasingly obvious how necessary having a phone was for kids my age was. I went to a middle school all the way across town and participated in numerous after school activities, so coordinating rides was a constant issue. Staying in touch with my classmates was also difficult without a cell phone. As I explained all these points to my parents they agreed, and on Christmas of my 8th grade year I was given a cell phone.
