A long passed down rule from my father's side of the family comes all the way from Georgia. My grandma was a firm believer in the importance of this rule and instilled it in every member of my family. The rule is simple, don't mix watermelon and diary in the same meal. My family is full of milk-drinkers so this supposedly simple taboo is hard to follow especially during the summer. If we have watermelon on the table during dinner, no ice cream for dessert. I understand why this rule was created, watermelon and milk don't mix well. But along the lines of this thinking, you wouldn't mix water and milk. However, I have seen my dad and grandma put ice cubes in their milk. Which honestly makes me sick just thinking about it. After witnessing that, I dismissed any control that the watermelon rule had over me. So now during the summer, I'll eat my hamburger with a tall glass of milk and then for dessert, devour a slice of watermelon. It might have caused my grandma to purse her lips but at least I'm not drinking watered-down milk.
