Assignment 2 - Jordan Grady - Returning to Reading

Throughout middle school, I was an avid reader. I loved the escape fantasy literature provided, finishing multiple books every week. As time has progressed, my love for reading has faded, becoming more of an affinity every now and again. The stressors of a busy schedule leave little time for my once favored pastime.
Over the last twelve months, my reading experiences have been limited, however I’m making a conscious effort to rekindle my love for books. Becoming by Michelle Obama helped to bring me out of my reading slump. This memoir of the former First Lady describes her life experiences from childhood to the White House in a humble, yet humorous way. As an admirer of Michelle Obama, this easily became my favorite read of this year.
Other than Becoming, one of my favorite books of the year was, surprisingly, a book I chose for an AP World History book report. The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett is a historical fiction piece set in twelfth century England, following the construction of gothic cathedrals and politics between the church and Crown. What I enjoyed about this book was that the perspective shifts between individuals of different social standings, which was a fascinating way to demonstrate the differences in social classes at the time. I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in history.
