Assignment 9- Katelyn Rowell- War

War is a difficult subject. Often times, I find myself not even wanting to check the news because of all violence. Upon seeing such destruction and hate, you start to lose faith in humanity. I guess the only time I think war is necessary is if it’s used as a means of defending oneself. This includes if people’s rights are being infringed upon or if a country is being attacked. However, if the situation can be avoided without violence, then I believe war should be avoided at all costs. Too many innocent lives are lost in war. Families are torn apart, homes are destroyed, and lives are forever changed.
In third grade, I read the book War Horse. While I don’t remember too much about the book, one particular chapter has stuck with me. Two soldiers from opposing sides had both stumbled across an abandoned horse. They chatted with each other for a bit and then agreed that they would flip a coin to decide who would get the horse. After simply flipping the coin, one of the soldiers said something along the lines of, “If only war could be solved this way.” The men shook hands and went their separate ways. No blood, no violence- just two men who peacefully worked out their problem.
